Skyview Golf Association*
The SkyView Golf Association founding members created a vibrant golf culture in Asheville, North Carolina in 1960 and built a golf tournament showcasing some of the game’s best black golfers. The SkyView Golf Association was founded and Incorporated in 1960 as a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit organization in an effort to promote golf competition among African American golfers throughout the United States. It was also intended as a stepping-stone to get Black golfers eventually ready for the Professional Golf Association (PGA) tour. This was the beginning of the long run of the summer golf tournament that still exist today each July.
The very first SkyView Tournament was an all-African American event with 50 participants. The tournament has grew consistently and significantly each year with the largest tournament field in 1975 when 274 golfers participated in the Skyview Open. SkyView remains one of the largest African-American-operated tournaments in the US.
*Please note the Skyview Golf Association is an independent organization from Friends of Asheville Muni, successfully operating the Skyview Open golf tournament since 1959 along with other community services.
